Ice Skating in Edinburgh: Where to Skate (2026)

Four real places to go ice skating in and around Edinburgh: Murrayfield's year-round rink, the George Street Christmas rink everyone still calls St Andrew Square, and two seasonal outdoor rinks a short trip from the centre.

Where to go ice skating in Edinburgh One rink open all year, three that only exist for a few weeks a winter

There are four real places to ice skate in or near Edinburgh, and only one of them is open right now, whatever month you're reading this in. Murrayfield Ice Arena runs public sessions year-round from a Category B-listed 1952 rink in the west end. The other three only exist for about six weeks around Christmas: the alpine rink on George Street (part of Edinburgh's Christmas), an outdoor rink beside the Orangerie at Dalkeith Country Park, and, less reliably, a rink inside the Gyle Shopping Centre's Winter Wonderland.

A lot of what's written about ice skating in Edinburgh is stale in one specific way: several sites still send you to St Andrew Square for the Christmas rink, which hasn't been true since 2018. It moved to George Street, and that's where you'll find it now. I've checked each rink's own site as of late August 2026, and I'm being upfront below about which prices and dates are officially confirmed for this coming winter and which are last season's figures, because the seasonal rinks genuinely hadn't published 2026/27 details yet when I wrote this.

If you just want to skate today, go to Murrayfield and check their weekly schedule first, since public sessions aren't daily. If you're planning a Christmas trip, the George Street rink is the classic experience and the one everyone means when they say "Edinburgh's ice rink," but it's also the priciest and the busiest, and it slots naturally into a day around our Edinburgh's Christmas markets guide nearby in Princes Street Gardens. Dalkeith is the better pick if you want the rink to be the whole outing rather than one stop among market stalls.

Murrayfield Ice Arena

If you want to ice skate in Edinburgh outside of Christmas, this is the only real option, and it's a good one. Murrayfield Ice Arena has been running since 1952, and the building itself is worth a second look: it's Category B listed for its Art Deco design, one of the few purpose-built ice rink buildings still standing anywhere in the UK. It's home to the Edinburgh Capitals ice hockey club and a handful of figure-skating clubs, and there's a seven-sheet curling rink from the 1970s tucked into the same building if skating isn't quite your thing and you fancy trying curling instead (public taster sessions for that aren't a standing, bookable offer, so treat it as a bonus fact rather than a plan).

Admission for public skating is £12 for anyone five and up, under-5s go free, and skate hire is £4 on top if you don't own a pair. The catch is the schedule: this isn't a rink you turn up to on a Tuesday afternoon expecting it to be open. Public 'General Skate' sessions run a handful of times a week, the exact slots shift with school terms, and one week in late August 2026 had a single Monday afternoon session plus three on Sunday. Book online through Fanbase Club and check the live calendar before you set off, not the week before.

activity · Murrayfield & West End
Murrayfield Ice Arena
13 Riversdale Cres, Edinburgh EH12 5XN, UK
Price: £12 admission for ages 5+ (under 5s free); skate hire £4; £5 locker deposit Hours: Public 'General Skate' sessions run several times a week, not daily, and the exact days/times shift with school terms. The week of 24 August 2026, for example, had one Monday afternoon slot and three Sunday slots. Always check the live online calendar before travelling.
Access: No formal accessibility statement published. Skate aids (including penguin-shaped stabilisers) are available for young or first-time skaters, and a steward is on the ice during public sessions. Call ahead if you have a specific mobility need.
Tip

Book online through Fanbase Club rather than turning up. Sessions are limited and the schedule changes weekly, so a wasted trip is a real risk here.

The rink is a Category B listed building (2013), recognised as one of the few surviving purpose-built Art Deco ice rinks in the UK. It's home to the Edinburgh Capitals ice hockey club and several figure-skating clubs.

Edinburgh's Christmas Ice Rink, George Street

This is the rink almost everyone pictures when they think of ice skating in Edinburgh, and it's the one people most often get the location wrong for. It sits on George Street, between Castle Street and Charlotte Square, as part of Edinburgh's Christmas, not St Andrew Square, which is where it used to be until 2018 and where a surprising number of older guides still send you. It's a covered alpine rink with on-ice bars, so you can skate up for a mulled wine or hot chocolate without stepping off the ice, and the roof means a rainy Edinburgh evening won't cancel your slot.

Sessions run 40 minutes and last season cost from £15, rising at peak times, with a 20% discount if you live in an EH postcode. The season itself ran 20 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, open 10am to 10pm most days (shorter on Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day, a later start on Boxing Day). This coming winter's exact dates hadn't gone up on the official site when I checked in late August 2026, but Edinburgh's Christmas reliably opens mid-to-late November, so plan around that window and confirm before you commit to travel. The honest drawback is cost and crowds: it's the most expensive rink on this list, and weekend evenings queue up fast once the Christmas markets are in full swing around it.

activity · New Town
Edinburgh's Christmas Ice Rink, George Street
125 George St, Edinburgh EH2 4JN, UK
Price: From £15 for a 40-minute session in the 2025/26 season, with peak/off-peak variation; 20% off for Edinburgh EH-postcode residents Hours: Last confirmed season: 20 Nov 2025 - 4 Jan 2026, daily 10:00-22:00 (10:00-20:00 Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day, 12:00-20:00 Boxing Day). 2026/27 dates weren't published on the official site as of 29 August 2026. Edinburgh's Christmas typically opens mid-to-late November, but confirm before booking travel around it.
Access: No rink-specific accessibility note published; Edinburgh's Christmas publishes a general access page, worth checking for wheelchair and mobility guidance before booking.
Tip

It's covered, so a wet Edinburgh evening won't cancel your slot. It's also the busiest and most expensive rink on this list, and weekend evening sessions queue up fast, so book ahead, not on the day.

This is the alpine rink everyone means when they talk about Edinburgh's Christmas ice skating: a covered rink with on-ice bars and seating, so you can skate up for a mulled wine without leaving the ice.

WinterFest Ice Rink, Dalkeith Country Park

If you'd rather the ice rink be the whole point of the trip instead of one stop among market stalls, this is the better pick. WinterFest sets an outdoor rink beside the Orangerie at Dalkeith Country Park, about 20 minutes southeast of the city centre by car, using synthetic 'Glice' ice rather than a refrigeration plant. Sessions run on the hour and last 45 minutes, with themed music nights on Fridays and Saturdays, and Restoration Yard's food and drink is right there for afterwards.

Last season's prices were £12 for adults, £11 for students, and £10 for children, dropping by £1 across the board for the final few days of the run (2-4 January), with a further £1 off per ticket for booking two or more days ahead. There's a £3 parking charge on top. The honest caveat: Dalkeith is technically in Midlothian, not Edinburgh itself, so it's a deliberate trip rather than a stop you stumble into. Even so, the Orangerie lit up behind the ice is a genuinely nicer backdrop than a city-centre street rink, and it's a good pick if you're combining it with a country-park walk.

activity · Dalkeith (just outside Edinburgh)
WinterFest Ice Rink, Dalkeith Country Park
Dalkeith Country Park, Dalkeith EH22 2NA, UK (rink entrance via King's Gate)
Price: Last confirmed season: Adult (13+) £12, Student £11, Child (5-12) £10; reduced 2-4 Jan pricing was Adult £11 / Student £10 / Child £9. £1 off per ticket for booking two or more days ahead. Hours: Last confirmed season ran 28 Nov 2025 - 4 Jan 2026, sessions on the hour, 45 minutes each, with themed music sessions Friday and Saturday evenings. 2026/27 dates weren't published as of 29 August 2026, so check the official site closer to the time.
Access: A general park accessibility page exists, but no rink-specific accessibility statement was published. Call ahead if step-free access matters to you.
Tip

It's about 20 minutes' drive southeast of the city centre and technically in Midlothian, not Edinburgh proper, plus there's a £3 parking charge. Even so, the setting, with the Orangerie lit up behind the ice, is genuinely nicer than a shopping-street rink.

An outdoor rink using 'Glice' synthetic ice (no refrigeration plant needed) set beside the park's historic Orangerie, with food and drink from the on-site Restoration Yard.

Gyle Winter Wonderland Ice Rink

I'm including this one with more caveats than the others, because that's the honest state of it. The Gyle Shopping Centre in west Edinburgh, near the Edinburgh Park tram stop, has run a Winter Wonderland event with an ice rink alongside Santa's Grotto, face painting and craft workshops in past seasons, confirmed by local press coverage rather than a big marketing push. What it doesn't have, as of late August 2026, is a confirmed return for this coming winter on the shopping centre's own site or events page.

A local family-events blog put last season's pricing at roughly £14 for adults and £10 for children for a 45-minute session, but that figure isn't confirmed by the Gyle itself, so treat it as a rough guide rather than something to book against. If it does come back, it's the most convenient rink for anyone already west of the city centre or near the tram line. If you're planning specifically around it, check gyleshopping.com or the centre's social channels closer to Christmas before you build a trip around it.

activity · South Gyle (Edinburgh West)
Gyle Winter Wonderland Ice Rink
The Gyle Shopping Centre, Gyle Ave, Edinburgh EH12 9JY, UK
Price: Not published by the Gyle Shopping Centre itself. A local family-events guide reported roughly £14 adult / £10 child for last season's 45-minute sessions; treat that as indicative only, not officially confirmed. Hours: Last known run was 28 Nov - 4 Jan. As of 29 August 2026, the shopping centre's own site and events page don't list a confirmed 2026/27 return.
Access: Not published for the rink specifically; the wider shopping centre is step-free.
Tip

Don't build a trip around this one without checking first. It's real, and it's the most convenient rink if you're already near the tram at Edinburgh Park, but the venue hasn't confirmed it's coming back this winter as of when I checked.

Part of a wider family Winter Wonderland event alongside Santa's Grotto, face painting and craft workshops, confirmed by local press to have included an ice rink last season.

── how to pick

Which Edinburgh ice rink to choose

Want to skate today, this month, any month? Murrayfield is the only option. Check the online schedule first, since sessions aren't daily.

Doing the classic Christmas trip? George Street is the one everyone means by "Edinburgh's ice rink." Book ahead, budget £15-plus a session, and expect queues on weekend evenings. It's a short walk from the main Edinburgh's Christmas markets in Princes Street Gardens, so it slots naturally into the same festive day out.

Want the rink to be the whole outing, not a stop between market stalls? Dalkeith Country Park's WinterFest, beside the Orangerie, is worth the 20-minute trip out of the centre for the setting alone.

Already in west Edinburgh or near the tram? Check whether Gyle's Winter Wonderland has returned before you plan around it. It's real but unconfirmed for this winter as of when I checked.

Traveling with kids? Murrayfield's public sessions have skate aids for first-timers, and the George Street rink runs dedicated toddler and quiet sensory-friendly slots. See our Edinburgh with kids guide for the rest of a family day out. The George Street and Dalkeith rinks are both still running through the New Year period, so if you're in town for Hogmanay, our Hogmanay guide covers the rest of the street party and fireworks.

Ice skating is just one line on a longer list. For everything else worth doing in the city, see our full things to do in Edinburgh guide.

── frequently asked

Frequently asked questions.

Where is Edinburgh's Christmas ice rink? Is it at St Andrew Square?
No, not any more. The Edinburgh's Christmas ice rink is on George Street, between Castle Street and Charlotte Square, right in the New Town. It used to sit in St Andrew Square, but that stopped after 2018. A lot of older articles and blog posts still say St Andrew Square, so if you're navigating by an old guide, head to George Street instead.
Is there an ice rink in Edinburgh all year round?
Yes, Murrayfield Ice Arena in the west end runs public skating every week, all year. It's the only rink in the city that isn't tied to Christmas. Public sessions are limited to a handful of slots a week rather than daily opening, so check the online schedule before you go.
How much does ice skating cost in Edinburgh?
Murrayfield is the cheapest at £12 for ages 5 and up (under 5s free), plus £4 for skate hire. The seasonal rinks run £10-£15 for a timed session: Dalkeith's WinterFest was £10-£12 last year, and the George Street rink is the most expensive at £15-plus for 40 minutes, with a 20% discount for Edinburgh (EH postcode) residents.
When does the Edinburgh Christmas ice rink open?
It runs as part of Edinburgh's Christmas, which typically opens in mid-to-late November and closes in the first few days of January. Last season ran 20 November 2025 to 4 January 2026. Exact 2026/27 dates hadn't been published on the official site as of late August 2026, so check edinburghschristmas.com before you book flights or plan a trip around it.
Can you go ice skating near Edinburgh without going into the city centre?
Yes. WinterFest at Dalkeith Country Park, about 20 minutes southeast of the centre, runs an outdoor rink beside the historic Orangerie every winter, with parking on site for £3. The Gyle Shopping Centre in west Edinburgh has also run a seasonal rink as part of its Winter Wonderland, though that one isn't confirmed to return every year.
