Stay in south London for cheaper beds, a neighbourhood that feels like everyday London, and a quick ride in: from Brixton, Stockwell and Vauxhall the Victoria line reaches Victoria in two to four stops, and trains from Clapham Junction and Battersea Park get there in one. Come for a gig at O2 Academy Brixton, the shops and the chimney lift at Battersea Power Station, a match at the Oval or a weekend of Clapham's pubs. Skip it if you want to walk to the sights, or if you want lots of hotels to choose from, because south London has few, and most are chains or pubs with rooms. My short answer: the Windmill on Clapham Common for a pub stay, Staybridge Suites in Vauxhall for families and longer trips, art'otel at the Power Station for a splurge, the Premier Inn in Brixton for a gig, and the Travelodges at Vauxhall (£129.99, about nine minutes from Victoria) or Clapham Junction (£119.99, about 14, with building work until December) for the cheapest fast trip to the centre. To weigh south London against the rest of the city first, start with the where to stay in London guide.
The page goes area by area: Brixton with Herne Hill and Tulse Hill to the south, then Clapham, Battersea and the Power Station, Vauxhall and Nine Elms, and last Oval and Kennington. For every place I give its nearest subway (the Tube) or train station and Google's walking minutes to it, Google's door-to-door public-transport time to Victoria station on a weekday morning, its Google rating, a dated price, the honest catch and a room tip. The two big riverside hotels on Albert Embankment, where Lambeth turns into Vauxhall, are in the South Bank and Waterloo hotels guide, and across Vauxhall Bridge the Pimlico and Victoria hotels are in the Victoria and Westminster hotels guide.
About the prices: each is the cheapest room for two on one ordinary night, Tuesday 10 November 2026, read on 25 September 2026 on the hotel's own booking site, or on Booking.com where the card says so (art'otel, the Park Hyatt and Chelsea Guest House). They include VAT, and London has no tourist tax yet. Many of the cheapest rates are non-refundable, so the flexible price is given too. The Lavender Guest House won't sell one night online (it asks for two or three), and two Travelodges were £64 apart on the same night, so treat these as a way to compare, and check your own dates.
