── the quick answer
Which South Bank hotel, by traveller
First visit, on foot to the Eye and Big Ben: the Premier Inn in County Hall on a budget, Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in the middle, the Marriott County Hall with a river view if money isn't the point.
Families: the pool and kitchenette studios at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge; Park Plaza County Hall's family studio with the Eye view; the Novotel on Lambeth Road or Blackfriars Road for sofa-bed rooms (Blackfriars has the pool); Marlin Waterloo if you want a kitchen.
A room with a view for the least money: the Premier Inn on York Road's landmark-view room (£242, £25 over its plain room), the Hyatt Regency's King Room with River View (£285) or Park Plaza Riverbank's Executive River View room (£297). By the Eye itself, Park Plaza County Hall's London Eye View Superior was £315.
Couples and design lovers: Bankside Hotel, Sea Containers (in a Riverview room) or the Hoxton; Ruby Lucy for less.
Budget: the Travelodge on Waterloo Road, then the Premier Inns on Lambeth Road, in County Hall and on York Road. The ibis Blackfriars is the cheapest room at the Tate Modern end.
Early trains from Waterloo: Ruby Lucy, the Premier Inn on York Road, the Hampton or the Travelodge, all four or five minutes from the concourse. For the Eurostar, you want St Pancras instead: see the King's Cross and St Pancras hotels.
Driving: Sea Containers has underground parking (£45 a night Sunday to Thursday) and the Novotel London Waterloo a car park. The Premier Inns, the Travelodge and the Hoxton have none (the public car park on York Road is £20 for 24 hours); check the others when you book.
Dogs: Ruby Lucy (Wow Rooms), the Hoxton, Park Plaza London Waterloo, Sea Containers (up to 9 kg), the Bankside Hotel (£75), the ibis Blackfriars, the Novotel London Waterloo and the Travelodge.
── the honest trade-offs
What each part of the South Bank gives up
County Hall and Westminster Bridge: the Eye and Big Ben on foot and the closest views of them; crowds around the Eye all day, and the cheapest rooms at the Park Plazas face an atrium.
Waterloo station, Lower Marsh and Lambeth North: the station on the doorstep, Lower Marsh's cafés and the Old Vic; busy roads, railway arches and no views to speak of apart from the H10's upper floors.
Upper Ground and Blackfriars Road: the liveliest evenings, Tate Modern and the best-designed hotels; 16 to 18 minutes to the Eye and the highest prices.
Lambeth Road and Albert Embankment: cheaper full-service rooms and cheap river views across to Parliament; a 20-minute walk to the Eye, and the Tube from Vauxhall or Lambeth North rather than Waterloo.

The ones you'll see on the booking sites
Also open and bookable, but second-tier: Point A Hotel London Waterloo on Westminster Bridge Road, a minute from Lambeth North, which sells some windowless rooms and rates 3.8 on Google; the Waterloo Hub Hotel & Suites on Kennington Road, also 3.8; The Wellington Hotel on Waterloo Road, a minute from the station (4.0 on Google); the Staybridge Suites London - Vauxhall on Vauxhall Walk, eight minutes from Vauxhall station but 24 from the Eye; and Captain Bligh House on Lambeth Road, a small guesthouse.
For a dorm bed, The Walrus on Westminster Bridge Road is a youth hostel above a bar, six minutes from Waterloo (one reviewer warns the trains pass close to the windows), and Onefam Waterloo is actually on Lambeth Walk, 16 minutes from the station, with free dinners on many nights. The Union Jack Club next to Waterloo station often appears in searches, but it's a members' club for serving and veteran enlisted members of the Armed Forces, not open to the public.

Prices and timing
The Premier Inn and Travelodge figures come straight from those chains' own sites on 25 September 2026; the rest are Booking.com, where limited-time deals come and go, so a hotel's price can move by £50 or more in a day.
If a New Year's Eve view of the fireworks is the goal, the Eye-view and river-view rooms named above are the ones that sell out first.
The London trip-cost guide has Tube fares, food and sight prices to set against these room rates.
