Match days at Twickenham
Allianz Stadium, 2026 to 2027. England play three Nations Championship matches at home in November: Australia on Sunday 8 November (3:10pm), Japan on Saturday 14 November (4:40pm) and New Zealand on Saturday 21 November (2:10pm). The Nations Championship Finals Weekend is at the stadium from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November. In the 2027 Six Nations, England host France on Sunday 14 February (3:10pm), Italy on Saturday 20 February (4:40pm) and Scotland on Saturday 13 March (4:40pm). Check the stadium's what's on page for the rest.
Getting to the ground. Twickenham station is about 10 minutes' walk from the stadium (the stadium's figure) and has step-free access from every platform. On event days with more than 35,000 people, England Rugby runs shuttle buses to the stadium from the A316 opposite Pools in the Park in Richmond and from Hounslow East station: £5 a person before the match, free after it. The Fan Village runs a queueing system after matches to stagger the crowds, so if you're staying in Richmond, the shuttle or the walk (40 to 55 minutes) can beat the train.
Don't plan to park on the street. On event days the Twickenham Event Day Controlled Parking Zone, run by Richmond and Hounslow councils, reserves local streets for residents, and cars without a permit are ticketed or towed. Stadium parking has to be booked online through England Rugby. If you're driving, a hotel with its own car park (the Premier Inn London Twickenham Stadium's is free; the Alexander Pope has one) is simpler, but ask what it charges on a match day.
── getting into town
How long it really takes
Honest journey times. TfL's Journey Planner, for a 10am Tuesday departure, puts Waterloo 24 to 31 minutes from Richmond, 25 from Mortlake, 27 to 36 from Twickenham, 31 to 35 from Kew Bridge, 33 to 38 from Brentford, 38 from Hampton Wick, 42 to 44 from Teddington and about 42 from Hampton Court, which needs a change at Surbiton for many trains. Piccadilly Circus is 32 to 36 minutes from Kew Gardens on the District line with a change at Hammersmith, 36 to 45 from Richmond, and 54 to 58 from Teddington or Hampton Court.
Which line. Richmond is the hub: South Western Railway to Waterloo, the District line of the subway (the Tube) to Kew Gardens, Hammersmith and Westminster, and the London Overground. Kew Gardens station has the District line and the Overground. Brentford, Kew Bridge, Syon Lane, Twickenham, Whitton, Strawberry Hill, Teddington, Hampton Wick and Hampton Court are all South Western Railway stations, with no Tube. Contactless cards and phones and Oyster cards work on all of them.

What you're staying out here for
Kew Gardens. Standard adult tickets are £25 online until 31 October and £17 online from 1 November to 31 January (£3 more at the gate), and every Tuesday from 8 September to 29 December 2026 a £10 Tuesdays ticket covers the day. Children aged 4 to 15 are £2 online. Book on kew.org. Victoria Gate, on Kew Road, is the one nearest Kew Gardens station, and the walking minutes here are to it.
Richmond Park, the river and Hampton Court. The Harbour and Richmond Hill hotels are at the top of Richmond Hill by the park, and the Thames path runs from Richmond Bridge past Petersham Meadows and Ham House. Hampton Court Palace is at the far end of this stretch of the river, where the Mitre sits across the bridge from the entrance.
── the quick answer
Which south-west London hotel, by traveller
First time out here, no car: the Orange Tree or the Selwyn, a few minutes from Richmond station.
Kew Gardens: Kew Gardens Hotel to walk to the gate, the Coach & Horses for a couple or a driver.
The view and a slow weekend: the Petersham, or the Harbour Hotel for the spa.
England at Twickenham: the Radisson RED if you can get a room, the Travelodge by Twickenham station if you can't, or anything in Richmond and the shuttle bus.
Hampton Court Palace: the Mitre, opposite the gate; the White Hart in Hampton Wick if you need a lift.
A family with a car: the Novotel London Brentford (pool, sofa-bed rooms) or the Lensbury (pools and sport).
A week with a kitchen: Aparthotel Adagio London Brentford.
Tight budget: Travelodge London Teddington (£46.99), Travelodge London Kew Bridge (£55.99), Travelodge London Twickenham (£54.99) or Travelodge London Richmond Central (£68.99), on a normal Tuesday.
── the honest trade-offs
What each patch gives up
Richmond town and the riverside: the best base out here, but still 36 to 45 minutes from Piccadilly Circus, and most of the characterful rooms are above pubs, with stairs and no lift.
Richmond Hill and East Sheen: the view and the park, but an uphill 20-minute walk from the station, and the Richmond Hill Hotel has the dearest starting rate in Richmond.
Kew: you walk to the gardens, but there are only two hotels of any size, and only the Coach & Horses has an accessible room.
Brentford and Syon Park: the most rooms for the money, on the wrong side of the river from Kew and mostly on a busy main road.
Twickenham: cheap on a normal night, sold out or three to six times the price on an England weekend.
Teddington and Hampton Court: Bushy Park and the palace, and the longest ride into town, 54 minutes or more to Piccadilly Circus.
Not here: the Chiswick hotels are in the west London hotels guide, and Wimbledon's are in the Wimbledon hotels guide. The White Hart Inn in Whitton, half a mile from the stadium, has a few rooms but no online booking and no two-person rate on Booking.com, and some rooms share a bathroom, so I'd book elsewhere.
── before you book
Prices, dates and the rest of the trip
Every rate here is for one room and two adults, checked on 25 September 2026, for Tuesday 10 November 2026, plus Saturday 31 October and Saturday 21 November (England v New Zealand) for the hotels that fill for the rugby. Most came from the hotel's own booking engine; Holiday Inn London - Brentford Lock and the White Hart Hotel in Hampton Wick came from Booking.com, and Bingham Riverhouse was full on the 10th, so its rate is for Tuesday 17 November. Prices include VAT, and London has no tourist tax yet.
The Young's pubs (the Orange Tree, the Coach & Horses, the Alexander Pope and the Park) all sell a cheaper prepaid rate and a flexible one about 10% dearer, and give a 1pm check-out to direct bookers when they can. To budget the rest of the trip, see the London trip-cost guide, and if you're flying from Heathrow, the Heathrow hotels guide covers the terminals.
