Stansted is in Essex, about 31 miles (50 km) north-east of central London, and nobody sleeps out here for the sightseeing. You sleep here because of an early departure: Stansted Airport asks you to be at security at least two hours before your flight, and the first Stansted Express from Liverpool Street leaves between 3:40am and 4:40am, so for anything before about 7am you want a bed at the airport. For a later flight, sleep in London. The train takes about 48 minutes to Liverpool Street and 36 to Tottenham Hale, so the City of London hotels and the Shoreditch hotels near Liverpool Street put you on the right line with London on your doorstep, and where to stay in London compares every area. Flying from elsewhere? See the Heathrow hotels or the Gatwick hotels. My short answer at Stansted: the Hampton by Hilton to walk to check-in with breakfast included, the Radisson Blu for a pool and a proper dinner, the Holiday Inn Express for a 4am breakfast on a budget, the Premier Inn for a cheap room, and the Novotel for park-and-fly.
Stansted has a single terminal, so the only question is how you get to it. The guide follows that: the two hotels on covered walkways, then three on Thremhall Avenue and Round Coppice Road that run a shuttle bus at about £4 a person, then three five to ten minutes' drive away that mean the hotel's own car or a taxi, and one country house for a later flight. Each hotel gets its route to check-in and what it costs, its parking or park-and-fly deal, when breakfast starts, the catch, and a dated price. Hotels are thin on the ground out here, and nine are worth booking.
The prices are for one room and two adults on Tuesday 10 November 2026, taken from each hotel's own booking engine on 25 September 2026 (the Radisson and Hampton rates are from Booking.com), VAT included, and they range from £46 at the Premier Inn to £190.50 at Down Hall. Use them to compare, not as a quote. Summer and the school holidays are the busy times, when these hotels fill and charge more, so price your own date and book August and half-term well ahead.
