Where to Stay in Bloomsbury: The Best Hotels Near the British Museum (2026)

26 hotels in Bloomsbury and Holborn, each with Google walking minutes to the British Museum and to Russell Square or Holborn station, a dated November rate, and the catches: stairs, shared bathrooms, no air conditioning. My short list: the Montague or the Zetter beside the Museum, the Rosewood for a splurge, NYX for a pool, the Ridgemount or the Harlingford for a B&B.

Where to stay in Bloomsbury 26 hotels near the British Museum

Stay in Bloomsbury if the British Museum is on your list, if you want Zone 1 without Covent Garden prices, or if you're arriving by Eurostar or flying into Heathrow. It's the university quarter of garden squares between Euston Road and High Holborn: the Museum is free, the Piccadilly line runs from Russell Square and Holborn straight to Heathrow, and Covent Garden and Soho are a walk away. My short answer: The Montague on the Gardens or The Zetter Bloomsbury beside the Museum, Rosewood London for a splurge, NYX for a pool, and the Ridgemount or the Harlingford for a family-run B&B. Skip it if you want nightlife on the doorstep (that's Soho) or old-fashioned charm with a lift and air conditioning at B&B prices, because Bloomsbury's townhouses rarely have either. Still choosing an area? Start with where to stay in London.

The page runs in four groups: the hotels round the British Museum and Russell Square, the Holborn hotels on and off High Holborn, the small B&Bs of Gower Street and Cartwright Gardens, and the Euston end of Upper Woburn Place. Every card gives walking times from Google's map to the Museum's main entrance on Great Russell Street and to the nearest Tube station, with its lines, and flags where there's no lift, no air conditioning or a shared bathroom. Euston Road is the northern edge: the hotels on it and north of it are on the King's Cross and St Pancras page. South of High Holborn is Covent Garden, and west of Tottenham Court Road is Fitzrovia.

The rates are for one night on Tuesday 10 November 2026, two adults, the cheapest double on each hotel's own booking engine (the Radisson Blu and Citadines prices are Booking.com's), checked on 24 September 2026, or 23 September for the four Euston hotels. Prices include 20% VAT and London has no tourist tax yet. Several chains knock up to 20% off for joining a free scheme, and the cards say so. Use the rates to compare these hotels, not as a quote: London hotels climb in the weeks before Christmas, in the summer holidays and on big event nights, and January and February are the cheapest months.

The Montague on the Gardens

3 minutes to the British Museum. The Montague on the Gardens is seven Georgian townhouses on Montague Street, built in 1806 and run by Red Carnation, with 101 individually decorated rooms, the Blue Door Bistro, the Leopard Bar and a private garden with a terrace behind. The Museum's main entrance on Great Russell Street is a three-minute walk and Russell Square station, on the Piccadilly line, six. This is the traditional London hotel done properly: doormen, afternoon tea and a garden bar when it's warm. If the British Museum is the reason for the trip, this is my first choice.

The catch is the rooms. Classic Doubles average 15 square metres, and on Tuesday 10 November only the Garden View King/Twin (17 sq m) was left, at £389 room only with free cancellation, or £429 with a full English. A discretionary £15 a night service charge goes on the bill on top. There's a lift to all five floors and air conditioning. Ask for the garden side. A Google reviewer puts it fairly: "The rooms are a little small with a small windows and no views, though they have all the amenities and comfort."

Price: from £389 a night (Garden View King/Twin, 17 sq m, room only, free cancellation to 2pm the day before; the only non-suite room left for Tue 10 Nov 2026 on the hotel's own booking engine, checked 24 Sep 2026; £429 with full English breakfast; a discretionary £15 a night service charge is added) Hours: Check-in 3pm, out noon; breakfast 7:30 to 10am weekdays, to 11am at weekends; 24-hour room service
Access: Lift to all five bedroom floors (80 cm by 140 cm); a listed Georgian building, so the hotel asks guests with access needs to call first
Tip

Book a Garden View room: it looks over the private garden and on 10 November it was the cheapest room left anyway. Classic Doubles average 15 sq m. Ask before arrival for a quiet room or one near the lift.

The rooms are a little small with a small windows and no views, though they have all the amenities and comfort. from a visitor review

The Zetter Bloomsbury

3 minutes to the British Museum. The Zetter Bloomsbury is the newest hotel on Montague Street: six restored Georgian houses a few doors from the Montague, opened in April 2026 with 68 air-conditioned rooms full of antiques, a cocktail bar with fireplaces called the Parlour, and breakfast and afternoon tea in a garden Orangery. The building held two older hotels, the Grange White Hall and the Grange Blooms, so if you remember those names, this is the same address. It's three minutes to the Museum and six to Russell Square station. For a couple who want a small, characterful hotel with a proper bar, I'd book this over anything else in Bloomsbury.

It's small and it isn't cheap. The entry rooms are tiny (the Cosy Room is 13 square metres), there's no full restaurant (food is small plates in the Parlour and breakfast and tea in the Orangery), and on 10 November the cheapest double was the lower-ground Cosy Hideaway at £387 non-refundable, or £329 with the free Zetter Friends sign-up. Lower-ground and some ground-floor rooms get little daylight, so pay for a garden view if light matters. A Google reviewer sums up the appeal: "Stunning rooms (my favourite is the junior suite with the beautiful bathtub in your room), lovely garden and the parlour with fireplaces."

Tip

Join Zetter Friends (free) before booking: it took the 10 November rate from £387 to £329. The lower-ground Cosy Hideaway was both bigger and cheaper than the 13 sq m Cosy Room that night; for daylight, pay for a garden-view room.

Kimpton Fitzroy London

2 minutes to Russell Square station. Kimpton Fitzroy London is the huge terracotta hotel that fills the east side of Russell Square, designed in 1898, with a marble lobby, 334 rooms, Fitz's Brasserie, Fitz's Bar, a lobby café and afternoon tea from £49 a head. The Piccadilly line (direct to Heathrow) is two minutes away, the British Museum six, and Great Ormond Street Hospital five. Come for the building: it's the grandest arrival in Bloomsbury. Families get a good deal, as children up to 12 stay free.

You pay for the lobby more than the room. The cheapest 1 Queen Room on 10 November was £575 non-refundable (£518 with the free IHG One Rewards membership) and those rooms run from just 16 square metres. There's a gym but no spa or pool, and no car park. If you're spending this much, spend a little more on a Park View room over the square. A Google reviewer's summary: "Easy walk to West End and the British Museum. Beautiful lobby and nice bar area."

The Bloomsbury

4 minutes to the British Museum. The Bloomsbury fills a Grade II-listed neo-Georgian building by Edwin Lutyens on Great Russell Street, at the west end of the quarter. It's the most social of the smart Bloomsbury hotels: the Coral Room bar, the Dalloway Terrace, open all year, and the Bloomsbury Club Bar. Tottenham Court Road station is two minutes away, with the Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines (the Elizabeth line runs to Heathrow and Paddington), and the Museum four. Book it if you want a drink with a scene downstairs and Soho just across Tottenham Court Road.

The standard rooms are compact for the price. A Classic Room averages 22 square metres and was £412.25 non-refundable on 10 November, £388 with the free DISCOVERY membership, or £485 flexible. There's a lift, a 24-hour gym and six accessible rooms with roll-in showers, but no car park. Ask for the courtyard side, which is quieter than the street. A regular guest's main complaint on Google: "the room was quite small, the door opens directly to the bed!"

One slight disappointment this trip is that the room was quite small, the door opens directly to the bed! from a visitor review

The Imperial

4 minutes to Russell Square station. The Imperial is the big modern block at the south-east corner of Russell Square, reopened in August 2026 after a long refurbishment by its family-run owner, Imperial London Hotels. It now has 357 rooms, air conditioning in every one of them (rare in Bloomsbury), six lifts, a 24-hour gym and Arcus, a rooftop bar and restaurant on the tenth floor that serves breakfast in the morning and turns adults-only after 5pm. The British Museum is five minutes' walk, the station four, and Great Ormond Street Hospital five. For brand-new rooms at a mid-range price, it's the one to watch.

It's new, and it shows in small ways: few reviews so far, the car park not yet open and a handful of details still listed as coming soon. It's cashless and takes a £100 a night card hold. The entry Bay room, with a super-king bed and a bay window but no minibar, was £386.10 non-refundable on 10 November, £429 flexible. An early Google reviewer: "Service was always friendly and newly renovated rooms were beautiful."

Tip

Bay rooms have big bay windows and super-king beds but no minibar. Book a City room if you want the Bell Room & Terrace lounge. The car park is due to open later in the year, so don't count on it yet.

Radisson Blu Hotel, London Bloomsbury

2 minutes to the British Museum. Radisson Blu Hotel, London Bloomsbury sits on Bloomsbury Street, the road that runs down the Museum's west side, so the main entrance is two minutes' walk, the shortest walk of any hotel here. Tottenham Court Road station is four minutes away. It's a reliable four-star chain hotel with air-conditioned rooms, a 24-hour desk and gym, and the Bloomsbury Street Kitchen for Mediterranean and Japanese small plates. It suits a business trip or anyone who wants the Museum and Oxford Street on the doorstep and no surprises.

It's the priciest of the mid-range chains here. On Booking.com a Standard Double was £423 non-refundable on 10 November (£445 with free cancellation) with breakfast £29 on top; the room alone costs more than a standard double at Thistle London Holborn or the Holiday Inn. Standard rooms come with a double bed; the Premium King is £48 more. A Google reviewer puts its case simply: "The hotel’s greatest strength is undoubtedly its location."

Holiday Inn London - Bloomsbury

2 minutes to Russell Square station. Holiday Inn London - Bloomsbury is a big, recently refurbished 317-room hotel on Coram Street, behind the Brunswick Centre's shops and supermarket. Russell Square station (Piccadilly line) is two minutes away, Great Ormond Street Hospital six and the British Museum nine. It's the practical family pick: kids stay and eat free, there are sofa-bed rooms that sleep four, and it's one of the few hotels in the area with its own car park (£28 a day under the building, 1.9 m height limit).

Standard rooms are small, 13 to 17 square metres, and the hotel does a lot of conferences, so the lobby can feel busy. The cheapest double on 10 November was £307 non-refundable, £298 with the free IHG One Rewards membership, or £359 flexible. If there are three of you or you'll unpack, pay the extra for a Corner Room (25 sq m). A Google reviewer: "We had a great stay at Holiday Inn Bloomsbury, with fantastic locations, newly refurbished rooms, a restaurant, and more."

Bedford Hotel

6 minutes to the British Museum. The Bedford Hotel is a 1960s building on Southampton Row with a surprise at the back: a secret garden with water features where it serves afternoon tea. It has a 24-hour desk, lifts, the Botanica restaurant and bar, its own car park, and it takes dogs. Russell Square station and the Museum are both six minutes' walk, Holborn seven and Great Ormond Street Hospital six. It's good value for a double of 24 square metres, which is large for central London.

There's no air conditioning (the group says so plainly) and Southampton Row is a busy road. On 10 November a double was £261 non-refundable or £290 flexible, and the garden-facing version just £9 more, which is the room to book. A Google reviewer's warning: "Nice hotel, very noisy if you get a room at the front."

President Hotel

3 minutes to Great Ormond Street Hospital. The President Hotel is a large, plain hotel on Guilford Street, round the corner from Russell Square, made from two older hotels knocked together (the Beatles stayed here in 1963). It has a 24-hour desk, lifts, an art deco atrium bar, a car park underneath and doubles of 21 square metres. Russell Square station is four minutes away, the British Museum seven, and Great Ormond Street Hospital is three minutes' walk, as close as any hotel gets. It suits a budget stay with a lift and someone on the desk all night.

It's functional rather than pretty, there's no air conditioning and many of the bathrooms are shower-only. A double was £197.10 non-refundable on 10 November, £219 flexible. If you've booked a bath, confirm it at check-in, going by one Google reviewer's experience: "Booked a room with bath...no bath and shower of the size of a shoe box, no airco".

Tavistock Hotel

6 minutes to Russell Square station. The Tavistock Hotel faces the garden of Tavistock Square, built on the site of Virginia Woolf's house, with the Poppadom Indian Kitchen and a pub-style bar, the Woolf & Whistle, downstairs. It has lifts, a 24-hour desk and some of the cheapest private-bathroom doubles in the area. The station is six minutes away, the British Museum eight and Euston nine. For a couple or a family watching the budget, it's the one I'd book over the big Royal National round the corner.

Doubles are 19 square metres, there's no air conditioning and many rooms have a shower but no bath. On 10 November a double was £197.10 non-refundable, a Park View double £206.10, and a Family Room for three (46 sq m) £224.10, which is the bargain in the building. There's no car park. A Google reviewer: "Clean comfortable terrific breakfast and poppadum restaurant fantastic!"

Rosewood London

2 minutes to Holborn station. Rosewood London is the luxury hotel of the quarter: an Edwardian building on High Holborn that you enter through iron gates and a carriageway into a courtyard, with Scarfes Bar, the Holborn Dining Room and its Pie Room, afternoon tea in the Mirror Room, a spa and a 24-hour gym. Holborn station (Central and Piccadilly lines) is two minutes away and the British Museum ten. For a milestone trip, or for anyone who wants Bloomsbury's museums and the West End's theatres at the same distance, this is the splurge.

The price is the trade-off, and so is the street: High Holborn is a busy main road on the southern edge of Bloomsbury, not a garden square. On 10 November the cheapest room offered was an Executive King (about 31 sq m) at £735 in advance, £864 flexible or £928 with breakfast. Families do well here: a Family Room with two double beds was the same price as a flexible Executive King, and children 16 and under stay free. A Google reviewer on the arrival: "From the moment you enter the stunning courtyard patio, you are met with an atmosphere that is both grand and intimate."

The Hoxton, Holborn

2 minutes to Holborn station. The Hoxton, Holborn is the lively one: 220 rooms above a big lobby that's full of laptops by day and drinks by night, the Rondo restaurant, food and coffee around the clock, air-conditioned rooms, lifts and free bikes to borrow. Holborn station is two minutes away and the British Museum six. It suits a short city break for two, especially if you like a hotel with a buzz downstairs, and booking direct buys you Flexy Time: choose your check-in and check-out times for free.

Rooms are named for their size and the small ones really are small: the Shoebox is 12 square metres and was £339 non-refundable on 10 November; the Cosy at 16 is the one for two, £389. There's no gym, no car park, and no rooms for more than two adults. The lobby works as an office, as one Google reviewer noticed: "A lot of people working, studying, or just leisurely browsing on their respective devices in the lobby."

NYX Hotel London Holborn

4 minutes to Holborn station. NYX Hotel London Holborn is the old Grange Holborn on Southampton Row, reborn with dark, moody rooms, a tenth-floor rooftop bar and something rare in central London at this price: a heated 13-metre indoor pool, with a sauna, steam room and gym. It has 213 rooms, air conditioning, lifts and a 24-hour desk. Holborn station is four minutes away, the British Museum six and Great Ormond Street Hospital eight. If you want a swim after a day of museums, this is the one.

The black-on-black décor divides people, check-out is 11am and the rooftop bar only opens Tuesday to Saturday. The published rate for a Classic Star Double on 10 November was £390.60 non-refundable, but the free Leonardo AdvantageCLUB membership took it to £312.48, which makes it good value for a hotel with a pool. A Google reviewer: "Really decent hotel in a good location. Added benefit of a pool with a sauna and steam room."

Thistle London Holborn

3 minutes to the British Museum. Thistle London Holborn is a 129-room hotel in an older building on Bloomsbury Way, just past St George's church, with a 24-hour desk, the Kingsley Two restaurant and the Kingsley Bar. The Museum is three minutes away and Holborn station five, so it's well placed between the Museum and Covent Garden. It's the sensible mid-range choice for a couple who want to walk everywhere.

Standard Doubles are 16 square metres, check-out is 11am, and recent reviewers are lukewarm about the breakfast. On 10 November a Standard Double was £359 non-refundable, £323.10 with the free membership. For three people, the Executive King with a sofa bed (30 sq m) was just £49 more. A Google reviewer on the building: "It is an old building which has modernised but still kept its charm with big sweeping stair case and quirky little passages."

Citadines Holborn-Covent Garden London

2 minutes to Holborn station. Citadines Holborn-Covent Garden is the self-catering option: an aparthotel on High Holborn where every studio (25 sq m) has a kitchenette with a hob, fridge, microwave and toaster, plus air conditioning and a 24-hour reception. Holborn station is two minutes away and the British Museum ten. For a week or more, or a family that wants to cook breakfast and eat in some nights, it beats a hotel room. The one-bedroom apartments (50 sq m) sleep four.

Rooms are cleaned weekly, not daily, the car park is closed for renovation and the front faces a main road. On Booking.com a Classic Studio was £326 non-refundable for 10 November, £356 with free cancellation, and breakfast is £16 a head if you don't want to cook. A Google reviewer on the location: "Holborn Underground Station is less than a 3-minute walk away, making it incredibly easy to travel around London."

Premier Inn London Holborn

7 minutes to Holborn station. Premier Inn London Holborn is on Red Lion Street, a side street between Holborn and Chancery Lane stations, and unlike its Euston sibling it has air conditioning in every room. There's a lift, family and interconnecting rooms, and the Thyme restaurant for the usual build-your-own breakfast. Holborn station is seven minutes' walk, Chancery Lane (Central line) eight, the British Museum 11 and Great Ormond Street Hospital seven. It's my pick for a predictable chain room at the Holborn end.

It's the furthest of the Holborn hotels from the Museum, the bedroom windows don't open and there's no car park. A Standard double was £238 non-refundable on 10 November (£270 fully flexible), and Premier Plus rooms with a coffee machine and fridge £274. A Google reviewer: "It was a real bonus to have air conditioning as it was so hot."

Premier Plus (£36 more) adds a coffee machine, mini-fridge and rainfall shower on its own floor. Family and interconnecting rooms available; up to two children eat breakfast free with a paying adult. No parking: Bloomsbury Square car park is £35 a day.

The Ridgemount Hotel

6 minutes to the British Museum. The Ridgemount Hotel is the classic Gower Street B&B: two Georgian townhouses run by the same Welsh family since 1965, 32 simple rooms, a full English breakfast included, a garden at the back and a lounge with tea and coffee around the clock. Goodge Street station (Northern line) is five minutes away, Euston Square six and the Museum six. Booked direct, an en-suite double with breakfast was £174 on 10 November with free cancellation, which is hard to beat for an en-suite room with breakfast in Bloomsbury.

It's a B&B, not a hotel: only 15 of the 32 rooms have their own bathroom, there's no lift across four floors, rooms are small, and the rooms come with central heating and windows that open rather than air conditioning. Book a room labelled Ensuite, and ask for the back if you're a light sleeper. A Google reviewer who keeps coming back: "The rooms are comfortable and just big enough, if you don’t have tons of luggage."

Access: Four floors of two Georgian townhouses; no lift listed
Tip

Only 15 of the 32 rooms have their own bathroom, so book one labelled Ensuite. The top-floor rooms, the old servants' quarters, are smaller. Ask for a room at the back if Gower Street traffic bothers you.

Staunton Hotel

3 minutes to the British Museum. The Staunton Hotel is a Grade II-listed townhouse at the southern end of Gower Street with 17 rooms, all en suite, marble bathrooms, a cooked or continental breakfast included, 24-hour check-in and, unusually for the street, air conditioning. The British Museum is three minutes' walk, Goodge Street six and Tottenham Court Road seven. For a small B&B that stays cool in July, it's the one to book.

There's no lift, and a reviewer mentions spiral stairs to the third floor and traffic on Gower Street at night. A Standard Double (15 sq m) with breakfast was £239.26 non-refundable on 10 November, £271.15 flexible. A Google reviewer covers it all in two lines: "Excellent location close to everything, excellent service and a great English breakfast, air-conditioned rooms. Please note that there is no elevator".

Tip

The Superior Double (16 sq m, with a sitting or dressing area) is the room to try for; it wasn't available on 10 November. Ask for a lower floor with heavy bags, and a back room for less traffic noise.

Arosfa Hotel London

5 minutes to Goodge Street station. The Arosfa is a Georgian townhouse at the north end of Gower Street, now run by Compass Hospitality, with a small guest-only bar, a lounge with a fireplace, a garden and breakfast included on direct bookings. Goodge Street (Northern line) is five minutes away, Euston Square six and the British Museum seven. Booked direct with the free membership, a double with breakfast was £153 on 10 November, which makes it one of the cheapest en-suite rooms in Bloomsbury.

The rooms are small (the Double is 12 square metres), the hotel doesn't list a lift or air conditioning (the Double has a ceiling fan), and reception closes at 10:30pm, after which you check yourself in with instructions sent ahead. Without the membership the double was £170 non-refundable or £189 flexible. A Google reviewer on summer nights: "There was a fan provided for the hot weather which was most helpful but there is no central air conditioning."

Jesmond Hotel

6 minutes to the British Museum. The Jesmond Hotel is a family-run B&B in a 1786 townhouse at 63 Gower Street, with 15 rooms (11 en suite), a small garden at the back and a cooked breakfast included. Goodge Street station is five minutes away and the Museum six. Families should look at its Quint En-suite, which sleeps five and is on the ground floor with no stairs from the street.

The cheap rooms are very basic. On 10 November the only double left was a Standard Double of 8 square metres on the top floor, six flights up with no lift, sharing a bathroom on the landing, for £130 with breakfast; the en-suite doubles over the garden were sold out that night and the next Tuesday, so book early for those. Reception closes at 10pm. A Google reviewer: "It is value for money, had a good english breakfast every day".

The Harlingford

5 minutes to Russell Square station. The Harlingford has been a family-run hotel since 1911, in three 1807 townhouses on Cartwright Gardens, the quiet Georgian crescent at the northern tip of Bloomsbury. The breakfast room looks over the crescent's gardens, and guests can book the tennis courts opposite. Russell Square station is five minutes away, King's Cross St Pancras and Euston eight each, and the British Museum 13. For a quiet night between the Museum and the Eurostar, it's my favourite of the small hotels.

It's a listed building, so there's no lift and no air conditioning, both of which the hotel states upfront, and there are four steps to the front door. On 10 November a Standard Double was £180 room only with free cancellation and payment on arrival, or £190 with breakfast. A Google reviewer: "The only issues are that there is no lift and, in summer, no air conditioning".

The Memoir Club

6 minutes to Euston. The Memoir Club is the renovated former Ambassadors Bloomsbury on Upper Woburn Place, themed on the Bloomsbury Set, with art deco-style rooms, air conditioning and an all-day restaurant and bar, Adeline, named after Virginia Woolf. Euston is six minutes' walk, St Pancras and the Eurostar seven, Russell Square station nine and the British Museum 13. Booking direct includes a buffet breakfast. It suits a couple who want a bit of design and an easy walk to the trains.

The rooms are compact for the money: a Club Double is 15 square metres, and £295 was the only rate on 10 November (flexible, breakfast included). Recent reviewers report teething faults after the refurbishment. If you'll unpack, pay £40 more for a Luxe Double. A Google reviewer: "Yes, it's cosy, but that's central London."

Hilton London Euston

5 minutes to Euston. Hilton London Euston is on Upper Woburn Place at the Euston Road end of Bloomsbury, with breakfast at Mulberry's, dinner at Woburn Place (a restaurant in a former conservatory), a gym, and family, triple and connecting rooms. Euston is five minutes' walk, St Pancras eight, Russell Square station nine and the British Museum 13. It's the one for Hilton Honors members and anyone catching an early train from Euston.

It's expensive for what it is. A Double Guest Room was £310 non-refundable on 10 November (£295 for members, £359 flexible), and recent reviews describe rooms that vary a lot between refurbished and tired, so ask for a refurbished one. Four Points Flex by Sheraton London Euston

6 minutes to Euston. Four Points Flex by Sheraton London Euston is a 201-room Marriott on Upper Woburn Place built around very small rooms, with a 24-hour desk, lifts, properly accessible rooms with roll-in showers and the Raven restaurant and bar. Euston is six minutes' walk, St Pancras eight, Russell Square station eight and the British Museum 12. It suits a solo traveller or a Bonvoy member who wants a chain standard and a lift for a night.

The rooms really are tiny. On 10 November only the Pods were left, 8 or 9 square metres (the 9 sq m one has no window), at £215 non-refundable or £194 for Bonvoy members; breakfast is £15 a head. Two people with cases should book early for a Compact or Corner room. A Google reviewer: "Tiny room, tiny bathroom. The frontdesk service was great, the hotel seemed very clean".

Premier Inn London Euston

4 minutes to Euston. Premier Inn London Euston is on Duke's Road, a side street just south of Euston Road, with the standard Premier Inn bed, a restaurant, a lift, family rooms and accessible rooms with wet rooms. Euston is four minutes' walk, St Pancras six, Russell Square station ten and the British Museum 15. It's the cheapest double with a lift at this end of Bloomsbury, at £182 non-refundable on 10 November.

Don't book it for a heatwave. There's no air conditioning in the building and the windows don't open, and that's the main complaint in recent reviews; the Holborn Premier Inn has air conditioning if you're travelling in summer. Generator London

6 minutes to Russell Square station. Generator London (the brand now calls it Generator London King's Cross) is a big design hostel on Tavistock Place with a 24-hour desk, a café, and a late bar built around a parked Routemaster bus. Russell Square station is six minutes away, King's Cross St Pancras nine and the British Museum 13. It's the cheapest bed here by a distance: dorm beds from £21.20 and a private twin with a shared bathroom for £78.70 on 10 November, with breakfast included when you book direct.

It's a hostel: the dorms and cheaper private rooms share bathrooms, which some reviewers have found dirty, the bar runs late, and dorms are adults only. The private rooms with their own bathroom sell out early (none were left on 10 or 17 November), and some rooms get hot in summer. A Google reviewer's take on the location is fair from the West End's point of view, less so from the Museum's: "The location, is next to kings Cross station but is quite far from central London."

── the quick answer

Which Bloomsbury hotel for which trip

The British Museum, and nothing else matters: the Montague on the Gardens or the Zetter Bloomsbury (3 minutes), or the Radisson Blu (2) if you want a chain.

A splurge: Rosewood London on High Holborn; Kimpton Fitzroy for the grand Russell Square building at a lower price.

Couples who want a bar and some style: the Zetter, The Bloomsbury or The Hoxton, Holborn.

Families: Holiday Inn London - Bloomsbury (kids stay and eat free, own car park), the Tavistock's 46 sq m Family Room, Citadines' one-bedroom apartments, or the Jesmond's ground-floor room for five. Kimpton Fitzroy and the Rosewood let children stay free in their parents' room.

A pool: NYX Hotel London Holborn, with a heated 13-metre indoor pool, sauna and steam room.

Air conditioning at a fair price: The Imperial, Premier Inn London Holborn, or the Staunton among the B&Bs.

Budget with a private bathroom: the Arosfa (£153 with breakfast for members), the Ridgemount (£174 with breakfast), the Harlingford (£180), or the Tavistock and the President (£197.10).

Cheapest: Generator London, with dorm beds from £21.20 and private twins from £78.70.

Great Ormond Street Hospital: ask the hospital about its Patient Hotel first; otherwise the President (3 minutes), Kimpton Fitzroy or The Imperial (5).

An early train from Euston or St Pancras: Premier Inn London Euston, the Hilton, the Memoir Club or Four Points Flex on Upper Woburn Place, or the Harlingford on Cartwright Gardens.

── the honest trade-offs

What Bloomsbury asks of you

Stairs. The Georgian townhouse B&Bs of Gower Street and Cartwright Gardens (the Ridgemount, the Staunton, the Arosfa, the Jesmond, the Harlingford) have no lift. Ask for a low floor, or book a hotel with lifts if anyone in your group can't manage four flights with a case.

Heat. Air conditioning is the exception in Bloomsbury. The Imperial London Hotels group says only The Imperial and its Morton Hotel have it, so the Bedford, the Tavistock and the President don't; neither do Premier Inn London Euston (sealed windows too), the Harlingford, the Ridgemount or the Arosfa. From June to September that's worth paying to avoid.

Shared bathrooms and small rooms. More than half of the Ridgemount's rooms share a bathroom, the Jesmond's cheapest double is 8 square metres with the bathroom on the landing, and the entry rooms at Four Points Flex (8 sq m), the Hoxton (12) and the Zetter (13) are tiny. Read the room name before you pay.

Traffic. Euston Road, Southampton Row, High Holborn and Gower Street are all busy, day and night. Ask for a room at the back or over a garden (the Bedford's garden-facing doubles are £9 more).

Early check-out. The Bedford, the Tavistock, the President, the Thistle, NYX, Citadines and most of the B&Bs ask you to leave by 11am.

If these are full

Around Russell Square the Imperial London Hotels group has three more: the Royal National on Bedford Way, the biggest hotel in the area (1,630 rooms when it was completed in 1998; a twin was £156.60 on 10 November, but reviewers mention crowds and long breakfast queues), and the smaller Morton Hotel on Woburn Place, which has air conditioning. Nearby are the Thistle London Bloomsbury Park on Southampton Row, the Grange Beauchamp on Bedford Place and the Celtic Hotel on Guilford Street, three minutes from Great Ormond Street Hospital. Radisson Blu Hotel, London Tottenham Court Road is on Great Russell Street, a few doors from its Bloomsbury Street sibling.

On Gower Street there are more small hotels: The Academy, Bloomsbury Palace and Hotel Cavendish. On Cartwright Gardens, next to the Harlingford, are the George Hotel, the Euro Hotel and the Judd Hotel, and St Athans Hotel is on Tavistock Place. The Crescent on Cartwright Gardens is no longer a staffed B&B: it's now a self check-in short let with kitchenettes and no breakfast. Further east, the Goodenough Hotel is on Mecklenburgh Square. And the Grange Blooms on Montague Street has closed; its building is now part of the Zetter Bloomsbury.

Just across the boundaries, the King's Cross and St Pancras page covers Euston Road and the station hotels, including Travelodge London Central Euston and the Wesley on the Euston side, and the Covent Garden page covers Travelodge London Covent Garden and the Middle Eight at the Holborn end of Drury Lane and Great Queen Street.

── frequently asked

Frequently asked questions.

Is Bloomsbury a good area to stay in London?
Yes, especially for a first visit on a budget or a museum-heavy trip. Bloomsbury is Zone 1, the British Museum is free, Russell Square and Holborn stations are on the Piccadilly line direct to Heathrow, Tottenham Court Road has the Elizabeth line, and King's Cross St Pancras and Euston are a walk away. It has a wide spread of prices, from £21 hostel beds and £130 to £240 small B&Bs on Gower Street and Cartwright Gardens to the Rosewood at £735. The trade-offs: the cheapest rooms are small, many townhouse B&Bs have no lift or air conditioning, and the main roads (Euston Road, Southampton Row, High Holborn, Gower Street) are busy. It's quiet at night compared with Soho or Covent Garden.
Which hotels are closest to the British Museum?
Of the hotels here, by Google's walking times to the main entrance on Great Russell Street: Radisson Blu Hotel, London Bloomsbury (2 minutes); The Montague on the Gardens, The Zetter Bloomsbury, the Staunton Hotel and Thistle London Holborn (3 minutes); The Bloomsbury (4 minutes); and The Imperial (5 minutes). The Museum is free, open daily 10am to 5pm (Fridays to 8:30pm) and closed 24 to 26 December; it recommends booking a free timed ticket in advance. There's a second entrance on Montague Place at the back.
Where should I stay near Great Ormond Street Hospital?
Talk to the hospital first. It offers rooms the night before an admission in its Patient Hotel in Weston House, across the road from the main hospital, with priority for families from outside the M25 (Accommodation Office 020 7813 8151, patienthotel@gosh.nhs.uk), and it works with The Sick Children's Trust, whose homes are mainly for parents of children in intensive care or high dependency. If you're booking a hotel yourself, the closest of the hotels here are the President Hotel on Guilford Street (3 minutes' walk; the small Celtic Hotel next door is also 3), Kimpton Fitzroy London and The Imperial on Russell Square (5 minutes), and the Holiday Inn London - Bloomsbury and the Bedford Hotel (6 minutes). The President and the Bedford have a 24-hour desk and a car park; the Holiday Inn has its own car park too.
What are the best hotels in Holborn?

How do I get from Heathrow to Bloomsbury?
Take the Piccadilly line: it runs direct from every Heathrow terminal to Holborn and Russell Square, so hotels near either station need no change. The Elizabeth line also runs from Heathrow to Tottenham Court Road, two minutes from The Bloomsbury and four from the Radisson Blu. From St Pancras International (the Eurostar), the hotels on Upper Woburn Place and Cartwright Gardens and the Generator are 7 to 9 minutes' walk from King's Cross St Pancras station, and Russell Square is one stop on the Piccadilly line.
