The 19 Best Bars in London (2026)

Nineteen London bars in six groups: the grand hotel bars, the hidden basement bars, Soho, the wine bars, the east London locals, and the late-night music bars. Every card has a drink and, where the bar publishes one, its price, plus whether you can book, the dress code where there is one, the hours and the nearest Tube.

The best bars in London from £9.50 Negronis to the £30 Connaught Martini

If you have one night, go to the Connaught Bar in Mayfair for a Martini mixed at your table (£30), No. 6 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025. It takes no bookings, so get there soon after it opens at 4pm. If you'd rather skip the hotel-bar prices and have just as good a night, go east to Satan's Whiskers in Bethnal Green, No. 21 on the same list. And if you only have an hour in the West End, a £9.50 Negroni at Bar Termini in Soho is hard to beat for value. For the rest of the trip, my things to do in London guide covers the sights.

The 19 bars below are sorted by the kind of night you want: the grand hotel bars, the hidden basement bars, Soho, the wine bars, the east London locals, and the late-night bars with live music. Each card uses the same spec sheet: what to drink and what it costs (a few bars don't publish prices, and the card says so), what the room is like, whether you can book, the dress code if there is one, the opening hours, and the nearest station on the Tube (the subway). Prices are from each bar's own latest published menu, checked on 28 September 2026 (the card gives the menu date), and include VAT (sales tax). Many bars add a 12.5% to 15% service charge, which is the tip, so you don't need to add another. London has no tourist tax yet.

This is the all-round guide. For a drink with a view, see my best rooftop bars in London, which covers 20 of them. For a proper pint in a historic pub, see my best pubs in London. Nothing here repeats either of those.

The Connaught Bar

The grand hotel bars. London's hotel bars are where the city's cocktail reputation was made, and they're worth one expensive night. The Connaught Bar is the one I'd pick. It's No. 6 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, the highest-placed London bar that's open right now, and the ritual is the Martini trolley: it's wheeled to your table and the drink is mixed in front of you, with your choice of bitters. Before that, Google reviewers mention a small welcome cocktail.

Drink: the Connaught Martini, £30; most cocktails are £25 to £30, plus 15% service. Vibe: hushed and polished early on, livelier and full later. Book: you can't; it's walk-in only, and Google reviewers say hotel guests get priority when it's full. Dress: no published code. Open: Monday to Saturday, 4pm to 1am; closed Sunday. Tube: Bond Street, about 8 minutes. The catch: a Martini and the service charge come to about £35, and when it's full you wait for a table.

Tip

No reservations at all, so arrive near the 4pm opening. No published dress code, but it's a five-star hotel bar, so dress up a little. Children are allowed with an adult. Nearest Tube: Bond Street (Central, Jubilee, Elizabeth lines), about 8 minutes.

The martini cart experience is quite special. from a visitor review

American Bar at The Savoy

The American Bar at The Savoy calls itself the original cocktail bar in London, and it opened in 1893. It's a clubby room with a piano, and it opens at noon, which makes it the easiest of the grand hotel bars to fit into a day of sightseeing around Covent Garden and the river.

Drink: Tea O'Clock (vodka, Lillet Blanc, an afternoon-tea blend and Nyetimber rosé), £28; most cocktails are £23 to £30, plus 15% service. Vibe: celebratory and a little theatrical. Book: yes, online. Dress: no formal code, but the hotel asks you to dress elegantly, and sports shirts are banned. Age: 14 and over. Open: Monday to Saturday noon to midnight, Sunday noon to 10pm. Tube: Embankment or Charing Cross, about 6 minutes. The catch: it's the most touristy of the three, and priced like it.

Scarfes Bar

Scarfes Bar in the Rosewood hotel on High Holborn is the most relaxed of the hotel bars: a clubby room with Gerald Scarfe's caricatures on the walls, and live jazz duos and trios on many evenings, with the dates listed on its website. It's No. 31 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, and the drinks are a few pounds cheaper than at the Connaught or the Savoy.

Drink: High Society (gin, vermouth, manzanilla), £22; cocktails are £20 to £24, plus 15% service. Vibe: clubby and relaxed, busier when the band starts. Book: mostly walk-in, with tables for 90 minutes; hotel guests and groups of six or more can reserve, and the contact page also offers online booking for up to five. Dress: no published code. Age: no under-18s after 6pm. Open: daily from 5pm until late. Tube: Holborn, 2 minutes. The catch: the 90-minute limit, and the room gets loud once the music starts.

Nightjar

The hidden bars. An unmarked door and a flight of stairs down is a London classic, and these three do it best. Nightjar is behind a plain door on City Road by Old Street station, and downstairs it's a dark, candlelit room with live jazz, swing and blues from 9pm every night. It's the speakeasy I'd book for a first visit to London.

Drink: Name of the Samurai, £16; most cocktails are £14 to £16. On top of that there's a music cover charge (£6 Sunday to Thursday, £10 Friday and Saturday, plus £6 for the Friday and Saturday late show) and 12.5% service. Vibe: candlelit, busy, and the band sets the volume. Book: yes, online; a few tables are held for walk-ins, and there's a £15-a-head-per-hour minimum spend. Dress: smart casual, no football shirts. Age: 21 and over. Open: from 7pm (summer hours), until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. Tube: Old Street, 2 minutes. The catch: the cover, the minimum spend and the service charge add up, and it's down a staircase with no lift. (Its sister bar in Carnaby closed in September 2025; only this one is open.)

Cahoots Underground

Cahoots Underground in Kingly Court, just off Carnaby Street, is dressed as a disused 1940s Tube station, with an old wooden escalator down, Northbound and Southbound platforms and a life-size Tube carriage to sit in. It's the most fun bar here for a group, with a live band on Friday and Saturday evenings and swing and rock'n'roll DJs until 2am.

Drink: Victory Garden (gin, Cointreau, green Chartreuse), £15; cocktails are £14.50 to £16.50, and the Cahooch Carriage, six shots in a model Tube carriage, is £42. Vibe: loud, playful and themed to the hilt. Book: yes, online for up to 12; tables are for 2 hours. Dress: 1940s outfits are welcome but not required. Age: strictly 21 and over. Open: from 4pm or 5pm (noon on Saturdays), until 2am Thursday to Saturday. Tube: Oxford Circus, about 6 minutes. The catch: come for the show, not a serious cocktail, and it's not wheelchair accessible.

Discount Suit Company

Discount Suit Company is a tiny basement near Petticoat Lane, in what used to be a suit tailor's storeroom, opened in 2014. Exposed brick, candles, Northern Soul on the speakers, and some of the fairest cocktail prices in central London.

Drink: Moonstomp (whisky, sake, mango, coconut), £10; every signature cocktail on the September 2025 menu is £10, and classics are £7 to £11. Vibe: dark, snug and friendly. Book: by enquiry form; wait for the email confirming your table. Walk-ins usually work early. Dress: no published code. Open: from 5pm (2pm on Saturdays), until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. Bar Termini

Soho, for one more drink. Soho is the easiest place in London for a bar crawl, and these three are all within a few minutes' walk of each other on Old Compton Street and Greek Street. Bar Termini is an Italian coffee bar by day and a Negroni bar by night, with a handful of tables, and its Negroni is one of the best-value drinks in the West End.

Drink: the house Negroni, £9.50, in four styles (Classico, Superiore, Rosato and Robusto); cocktails are £15.50 and an espresso is £3, plus a 14.5% service charge. Vibe: small, busy and quick. Book: yes, from 4pm Monday to Thursday and 3pm Friday to Sunday, for 1 hour and up to 5 people; otherwise walk in. Dress: no published code. Swift Soho

Swift, across the street, is two bars in one. Upstairs is a walk-in bar for aperitifs and a quick drink; downstairs is a low-lit, bookings-only bar with a whisky list of over 300 bottles. Its Irish Coffee has a big following, and there's live jazz downstairs on Tuesday and Sunday evenings.

Drink: the Carmen (tequila, lime sherbet, toasted blue corn), £16; most cocktails are £12 to £16, a 2/3 pint of König Pilsener is £5.50, plus 12.5% service. Before 6pm, Monday to Thursday, marked cocktails start at £7. Vibe: upstairs is lively, downstairs is quiet and dark. Book: downstairs only, in 2-hour slots from 5pm, for up to 6. Milroy's of Soho

Milroy's has been selling whisky since 1964, and it's the whisky bar I'd send anyone to in London. At the front is the shop and a bar with over 300 whiskies by the measure; tell the staff what you usually drink and they'll pick for you. Through a bookcase at the back is The Vault, a candlelit basement cocktail bar.

Drink: a dram picked for you at the front, or the Vault's Coconut Butter Old Fashioned, which has been on the menu for ten years. Prices aren't listed online. Vibe: calm and chatty at the front, intimate in The Vault, with live jazz on Mondays. Book: the whisky bar is walk-in only; The Vault can be booked on OpenTable. Dress: no dress code. Open: the bar from 10.30am (2.30pm Sunday) to midnight; The Vault 5pm to midnight, closed Sunday. Tube: Tottenham Court Road, 3 minutes. Gordon's Wine Bar

The wine bars. London has a whole wine-bar scene of its own; these are the two I'd pick for a first visit. Gordon's Wine Bar by Embankment station says it's thought to be the oldest wine bar in London, and it has been open since 1890: a candlelit vaulted cellar with sherry and port served from the barrel, and a big heated terrace outside on Watergate Walk. It's the most atmospheric cheap drink in central London.

Drink: the house Bordeaux blanc, £10.10 a glass (£36 a bottle), or fino sherry from the barrel at £6.10; cheese boards from £10.95, with a 5% service charge. Vibe: candlelit, crowded straight after work. Book: no; it's first come, first served, and the bar suggests arriving by 4.45pm on weekdays. Dress: no published code. Open: Monday to Saturday 11am to 11pm, Sunday noon to 10pm. Tube: Embankment, 2 minutes. Noble Rot Lamb's Conduit

Noble Rot on Lamb's Conduit Street in Bloomsbury is the wine lover's pick. The front room is a walk-in wine bar with a long list by the glass, poured as a 75ml taster or a 125ml glass, so you can try three or four wines without buying a bottle. There's a restaurant at the back if you want to stay for dinner.

Drink: a 125ml glass of the 'Chin Chin' Vinho Verde, £6, or something rarer; most still wines are £8 to £19 a glass, plus 12.5% service. Vibe: relaxed and grown-up. Book: the wine bar and terrace are walk-in only; the restaurant takes bookings. Dress: no published code. Open: Monday to Saturday noon to 11pm, bar food from 4pm; closed Sunday. Three Sheets was opened in Dalston in 2016 by the brothers Max and Noel Venning, and the menu is split into one, two and three 'sheets' by how strong and intense each drink is, which makes ordering easy. Ain't Nothin' But

Late nights, live music and dancing. These are for when you want the night to keep going. Ain't Nothin' But, round the corner from Carnaby Street, has had live blues every night since 1993: usually an acoustic set at 6.30pm on weekdays, then the main band at 9pm, and jam sessions on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights. Before the evening cover charge kicks in, it's free live music in the middle of the West End.

Drink: a beer or a whisky; drink prices aren't listed online. Entry is free, with a cover charge later in the evening (after 9pm Wednesday and Thursday, after 8.30pm Friday and Saturday); the amount isn't published. Vibe: narrow, packed and loud in the best way. Book: no bookings or guest list; arrive early. Dress: no published code. Age: 18 and over. Trailer Happiness

Trailer Happiness on Portobello Road has been a basement tiki bar since 2003, low-lit, retro-tropical and full of rum. Midweek it's a proper cocktail bar; at weekends the DJs take over and people dance. It's my pick if you're staying in west London and want a night out that isn't a pub.

Drink: the Mai Tai, £14, or a Zombie, £16; cocktails are £12 to £16 and a lager is £6, plus 12.5% service. Vibe: chilled midweek, a party at weekends. Book: yes, online, by email or by phone. Dress: no published code. Open: from 5pm (4pm at weekends), until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Tube: Ladbroke Grove, about 8 minutes. The catch: on a Saturday it's closer to a club than a cocktail bar, with the music turned up.

Ridley Road Market Bar

Ridley Road Market Bar in Dalston is the late one: a kitsch tropical bar with a dance floor, DJs on Friday and Saturday, and doors open until 3am Thursday to Saturday. Tuesday to Thursday there's karaoke, live music and new DJs instead.

Drink: the house mojitos and frozen piña coladas; during happy hour (6pm to 9pm, Tuesday to Friday) it's two drinks for £12. Vibe: sweaty, friendly and not remotely fancy. Book: online, until 8.15pm on Friday and 7.15pm on Saturday; after that, walk in. Entry is free, except £6 after 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Dress: no published code. Open: Tuesday and Wednesday 6pm to 2am, Thursday to Saturday 6pm to 3am. Station: Dalston Kingsland on the London Overground, 4 minutes. The catch: there's no kitchen at the moment, so eat before or order a delivery.

Royal Vauxhall Tavern

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern has been at the heart of London's LGBTQ+ scene since the 1950s, and the building is Grade II listed by Historic England. It's a Victorian pub turned cabaret stage: drag and comedy shows, a Sunday Cabaret every week, and club nights on Fridays and Saturdays that run until 3am or 4am. Everyone is welcome.

Drink: a pint of Beavertown Neck Oil, £6.70, or a glass of house wine, £8. Vibe: loud, joyful and mostly standing. Book: tickets for most shows and club nights, in advance online (the Sunday Cabaret is £11 in advance, and also sells tickets on the door from 4pm). Dress: no published code. Age: events are 18 and over. Open: Sunday 4pm to 10.30pm, Thursday 7pm to midnight, club nights at weekends; other nights depend on the show. Tube: Vauxhall, 2 minutes. The catch: the cloakroom is compulsory at £2 per coat or bag, and on big nights, especially around Pride, the queue is long.

Which London bar, by occasion

One special night: the Connaught Bar for a Martini from the trolley. Go early; there are no bookings.

Old-school glamour: the American Bar at The Savoy, open from noon.

Cocktails with live jazz: Scarfes Bar, or Nightjar if you'd rather be in a basement.

A group night out: Cahoots Underground, booked ahead.

A cheap drink in the West End: a £9.50 Negroni at Bar Termini, or a £10.10 glass of wine in Gordon's candlelit cellar.

Whisky: Milroy's of Soho, or Swift's downstairs bar.

Wine: Noble Rot for the list, Gordon's for the atmosphere.

Great cocktails without the dressing up: Satan's Whiskers, Three Sheets or The Sun Tavern, all out east.

Craft beer: The Kernel on a weekend afternoon.

Dancing late: Ridley Road Market Bar until 3am, or a club night at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

Skip if you're short on time: The Kernel and Trailer Happiness are worth it only if you're already nearby, and Cahoots is a themed night out, not a cocktail bar for connoisseurs. One more: Tayēr + Elementary on Old Street, No. 5 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, is temporarily closed after a fire in its building, so don't plan around it until it reopens.

How bars work in London

Paying: menu prices include VAT. Many bars add a discretionary service charge of 12.5% to 15%; that's the tip, so don't add another. In pubs and walk-up bars you order and pay at the bar and nobody expects a tip. Some bars, like Swift, are card only, so carry a contactless card or phone.

Age and ID: the legal drinking age is 18, but some bars set their own limit: Swift, Nightjar and Cahoots are 21 and over. Carry a physical photo ID (a passport or driving licence); door staff often ask.

Booking: book for Friday and Saturday nights wherever you can. Many bars give you a time slot (an hour at Bar Termini, 90 minutes at Scarfes, two hours at Cahoots and Swift). Walk-in-only bars, like the Connaught and Gordon's, are easiest early in the evening.

Closing time: many London bars close between 11pm and 1am. For later drinks, Nightjar, Cahoots, Discount Suit Company, The Sun Tavern and Ain't Nothin' But run to 2am at weekends, and Ridley Road and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern's club nights go to 3am or later.

Getting home late: the Night Tube runs through the night on Fridays and Saturdays on parts of the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, and night buses run every night. Tap in and out with a contactless card or phone; you don't need a separate ticket.

Where to go next: for dinner before or after, see my best restaurants in London, and for the sights in daylight, my things to do in London guide. If you're still choosing a base, my where to stay in London guide compares the areas; Soho, Covent Garden and Shoreditch put you closest to the bars here.

── frequently asked

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best bar in London?
For a special night, the Connaught Bar in Mayfair: No. 6 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, famous for Martinis mixed at your table from a trolley (£30, plus 15% service), and walk-in only. For a relaxed night with drinks just as good, Satan's Whiskers in Bethnal Green (No. 21 on the same list). If you want one bar with some history, the American Bar at The Savoy, which opened in 1893.
Where is the best area for bars in London?
Soho is the easiest area for a first night: Bar Termini, Swift, Milroy's and the Kingly Court bars are all within a 10-minute walk of each other, around Leicester Square, Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus stations. For better value and a more local crowd, go east to Shoreditch, Bethnal Green and Dalston. Mayfair and the Strand are where the grand hotel bars are.
How much is a drink in a London bar?
On the bars' own menus (checked 28 September 2026), a cocktail costs £10 at The Sun Tavern and Discount Suit Company, £14 to £16 at most independent bars, and £20 to £30 at the big hotel bars (a Connaught Martini is £30). A pint of lager runs about £6 to £7. Many bars add a 12.5% to 15% service charge, which is the tip. A few places are much cheaper: a Negroni at Bar Termini is £9.50, and Ridley Road Market Bar does two drinks for £12 from 6pm to 9pm, Tuesday to Friday.
Which London bars are open late?
Most London bars close between 11pm and 1am, but several go later at weekends. Ridley Road Market Bar in Dalston stays open until 3am Thursday to Saturday, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern's club nights run to 3am or 4am, and Cahoots Underground, Discount Suit Company and Ain't Nothin' But go on to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. Nightjar runs until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Do you need to book bars in London?
For the popular bars on a Friday or Saturday, yes, where you can. Nightjar, Cahoots and the Savoy's American Bar all take bookings online, and Swift's downstairs bar is bookings only. Some of the most famous take no bookings at all: the Connaught Bar, Gordon's Wine Bar and Ain't Nothin' But are walk-in only, so arrive early. Most bars keep a few tables back for walk-ins.
